What is a reconditioned stairlift?

A reconditioned stairlift is a used stairlift, usually made up of mixed parts. For example, it may have a chair and rail that was manufactured in 2018, but a replacement motor that was brand new. The reconditioning process is usually performed by an experienced installation company who can test all the parts and ensure that although it is a used stairlift, all the parts are safe and fit for purpose.

The reconditioned stairlift is then fitted to your property by an experienced installation company. We have many installers that can fit a reconditioned stairlift and discuss pricing with you, just fill out our form to request a reconditioned stairlift quote.

What is a second hand stairlift?

A second hand stairlift is, more or less, the same thing as a reconditioned stairlift. Sometimes this term is preferred when describing a used stairlift that is simply taken out and then fitted to another property without being ‘reconditioned’ by an installer. This would be the case if you have purchased a stairlift privately from an owner and fitted the stairlift yourself.

The danger with a second hand stairlift if it has not been reconditioned is that the parts have not been tested and you may have no idea how old the stairlift is. It may be close to the end of its life, as stairlifts have an estimated lifespan of around 10 years.

Brand New VS reconditioned stairlifts

A question we get asked a lot is ‘should I buy a reconditioned stairlift’ and although the decision lies in the hands of the buyer completely, we have some useful tips we can share to help you make your decision.

How long do you intend to use the stairlift for?

A second hand / reconditioned stairlift can be a great option to lower the cost of your stairlift, but an important question to ask if how long you intend to use it. A second hand/recon stairlift has quite obviously less life in it because it has already been fitted once. Most installers will not disclose the age of the stairlift they are fitting second hand, or if it has been reconditioned with older parts that may not last as long.

For this reason, the average lifespan of a reconditioned stairlift is around 3 years, compared to around 10 years for a brand new stairlift.

FAQ’s

How much is a recon/second hand stairlift?

Reconditioned stairlift prices start at as little as £499, but stairlifts that cost this little are likely to be comprised of mostly older parts so the stairlift would likely not last for very long without requiring significant repairs.

The average price for a straight reconditioned stairlift is around £1,500 – £2,000

The average price for a curved reconditioned stairlift is around £2,500 – £3,500, but not all installers will fit curved stairlifts as a reconditioned unit due to its custom rail.

How much can you afford to spend?

Reconditioned or second hand stairlifts can vary wildly in price. Some recon stairlifts cost as little as £499, and others are priced very similarly to brand new stairlifts. The reason for this is usually how old the parts are, and if the stairlift is a current model that is still being manufactured and used widely.

We understand that money talks, but the saying “buy cheap buy twice” really does apply when it comes to stairlifts. If you purchase a reconditioned stairlift that is already 8 years old and obsolete, the chances are should it break down the whole stairlift will need to be replaced rather than a simple repair.

If you would prefer to buy a brand new stairlift but it is out of budget, visit our page discussing grants to see if you may qualify for help funding your stairlift.

What is the downsize to buying a reconditioned stairlift?

Of course, the main ‘pro’ with buying a reconditioned stairlift is that the price is likely cheaper than a brand new stairlift, but we always advise getting quotes for new stairlifts too as there may not be a huge difference in the price.

The main downside to buying a reconditioned stairlift is that because the parts are already used, it can be hard to predict if you will have problems with the stairlift. Depending on the age of the parts, it could be already over 5 years old and starting to have issues. This can mean that the eventual repairs outweigh what you have saved from buying it reconditioned as opposed to brand new. It can also be very upsetting for the user if the stairlift is breaking down often and affecting their independence.

Can You Sell A Reconditioned Stairlift?

When your reconditioned stairlift is no longer needed and the time comes to remove it, you may be able to sell it. It is worth noting that if you bought your stairlift reconditioned it will likely have some or all used parts so you will likely not know how old it is.

We recommend contacting We Buy Any Stairlift. They will likely require some photographs of your stairlift to determine the age and whether it would be useful for them to reuse. Find out more information on stairlift removal on our dedicated page.
