Stairlift Repairs And Servicing Guide

Stairlift Repairs and servicing guide

Some of our customers express their worries that their stairlift will become a money pit like buying a bad car. We understand the initial cost of a stairlift is a very big investment already, so you want to ensure your finances are protected should the stairlift ever break down or require a repair. So how does it all work?

Warranty

First, it is important to understand if your stairlift comes with warranty provided. Most stairlift installers will include a 12-month warranty as standard. This is usually the case whether your stairlift is straight, curved, or outdoor. The warranty may be up to 2 years depending on the stairlift installer you choose. The warranty may only cover the stairlift parts, so it is important to read the terms and conditions thoroughly to ensure it includes the cost of labour also. Warranty will not include damage caused my negligence including incorrect use or damage by yourself or other people (whether accidental or purposeful). The warranty may also include a one year service to keep the stairlift running well.

Additional warranty/servicing package

Many of our installers offer a fantastic stairlift cover package. The package is at an additional cost but lasts 4 years. Research shows that the average stairlift is used for 4-5 years, so it would cover the expected lifetime of the stairlift but can be extended further if needed. The stairlift cover package not only extends the warranty on the parts, but includes annual servicing to keep the stairlift in top condition, and all costs of the repairs when needed. Usually when you purchase an extended warranty/servicing package the installer will give you priority for a repair, so you are fast tracked. If your stairlift cannot be repaired or isn’t worth repairing depending on the issue, the installer will replace the stairlift in full.

Do I need to pay for a service?

No servicing is completely optional, however if you opt for the extended warranty the yearly service is usually required for the warranty to be valid. However, we do usually recommend you have the stairlift serviced once a year to keep it in good working order.
If you have a stairlift that is no longer being used due to a bereavement or change of circumstance we do not recommend you continue having it serviced, unless it has been prepaid for already.

What is included with a stairlift service?

Within your annual service appointment, the engineer should carry out the following:
  • Replace batteries if low
  • Clean dusty from circuit boards and electrician connections
  • Check for any loose parts and tighten if needed
  • Clean the charging contact points (top and bottom)
  • Tighten bolts on stair brackets
  • Charging circuit inspection
  • Replacement of worn parts
  • Gear rack lubrication
  • Grease seat swivel and footrest hinges
  • Check general operation and test run
  • Recommendation of repairs if required

How to tell if my stairlift requires a service?

If you notice anything out of the ordinary with your stairlift please arrange a service with the original installer immediately. It is likely a minor issue that needs a slight adjustment, but it certainly isn’t worth risking your health and safety over. Most stairlift servicing is less than £200 if paid for on a one-off basis or maybe included within your installation package. The service price will include general maintenance advised above, but not any major repairs if they are required. They will however diagnose the issue and provide a price for the repair.
Arrange a service immediately if you notice:
  • Loosening parts such as bolts or loose electrical connections
  • Stairlift is running slower or faster than usual
  • Stairlift is making a strange noise such as beeping, humming, or screeching
  • Stairlift only operating a few cm then stopping
  • It has no power when turned on at the socket and switch

All our trusted installers have extended warranty and servicing packages available, with a basic 12 month included as standard across all models of stairlifts.
