FAQ’s
Is a stairlift right for me?
If you are finding it increasingly difficult to manage your stairs, whether due to age, injury or disability, a stairlift could be a great option for you. Stairlifts are a popular option because they can be installed quickly and with minimal disruption to the user’s life and home. Contrary to public belief, most stairlifts are not installed to the wall but to the stairs so the only ‘damage’ to the home would be small holes from where the rail is bolted to the stairs.
The installer will provide a free of charge survey to take your measurements, as well as the measurements and layout of your staircase, to ensure their stairlift would be the right option and safe for you to use. They would provide you with a no obligation quote for the stairlift at this stage also.
If you are not confident about whether you need or want a stairlift just fill out our form with some notes and we can make sure the agent discusses any of your concerns with you
What is a stairlift comparison site?
Much like many of the popular comparison sites we typically use for insurance quotes, Quotes For Stairlifts provides quotes and comparison of stairlift prices in a quick and easy way. We understand that buying a stairlift can be a very big investment for most people, so it’s important to get a few prices and be confident in your purchase.
We only ever get quotes from verified installers with quality products and a professional service. We work with some of the biggest stairlift brands in the UK such as Acorn, Brooks, Handicare, Companion, and Age UK. We are fast-tracked so you will always be contacted the same day, and get exclusive discount offers. We also work with smaller local installers who can fit a reconditioned stairlift to save on costs!
What is the average cost of a stairlift in the UK?
In 2022 the average cost of a straight stairlift was £2,845, and a curved stairlift averaged at £4,217. It is important to understand that these are average prices, and your stairlift quote will be tailored according to what is required for your staircase once the installer has conducted a survey. For example, the price could be a lot lower than this if you only have a standard number of stairs and do not need any additional adaptations. The price may be higher than average if you have a long staircase, or if a lifting hinge needs to be added so that the rail doesn’t obstruct any doors.
Why does stairlift price vary?
The price quoted for stairlift installation can depend on many factors, but the biggest aspect is what features your stairlift requires to be installed correctly e.g. is a curved stairlift with 3 bends required, or a standard straight run for 13 steps? The second factor would be what the user themselves require e.g. can they operate a button to control the stairlift? Do they need a footplate that folds up automatically or can they bend down to fold it themselves?
Another major influence on the price is the brand of stairlift manufacturer. Some brands that are very popular such as Acorn, Stannah and Handicare tend to have a higher price tag as they’ve earned a good reputation as a quality installer, with in demand products that are deemed to be reliable and top of the range.
Do I have to have a survey?
Although the installer may be able to give you an estimate verbally, if you are looking to get an accurate quote a stairlift survey is always necessary. This is because even for a straight stairlift to be fitted they will need to determine if the stairs are wide enough, measure the length of the stairs, and check if there are any obstructions.
All the installers we work with provide a free of charge, no obligation survey. They can often complete this within days of your initial enquiry at a time that is convenient for you.
Can I get a quote for a reconditioned stairlift?
Yes, some of our installation partners provide reconditioned / second hand stairlift installations. Pricing of their reconditioned lifts is dependent on the age of the stairlift installed and the installation requirements as per the survey.
The price of a reconditioned/second hand stairlift is usually between £1,500 – £2,000 for a straight stairlift, and £2,500 – £3,500 for a curved stairlift. It is worth noting some installers do not offer reconditioned options for curved stairlifts as the rail may need to be made bespoke.
Can I rent a stairlift?
Yes, some companies provide the option to rent a stairlift temporarily rather than buying one. Renting a stairlift is a great option for someone with a temporary condition, such as someone who has had a recent operation who is on the mend.
So, how much is it to rent a stairlift? A survey will be required to determine what type of stairlift you need, but prices can range from £50-200 per month. It is worth noting that there is usually an installation/removal fee within the contract which can be upwards of £1,000. There is usually a minimum term of 3-6 months.
Renting a stairlift is a great option for a temporary ailment, but if you think the stairlift may be required for over 12 months it is advised to buy rather than rent. If you rent a stairlift for more than 12 months, you may end up paying more than purchasing a stairlift from new.
Can I get a grant to fund my stairlift?
Depending on your circumstances, you may be eligible for financial assistance via the council to help fund your stairlift. For information on the disabled facilities grant see our guide to Getting a stairlift fitted by the council
VAT on stairlifts
We find that most customers are eligible for 0% VAT when purchasing a stairlift. There are two types of exemption:
0% VAT – if the applicant is disabled or suffers from a chronic illness they qualify for a total exemption from VAT. If you think you may qualify, speak to your installer and they can provide a form to complete prior to the stairlift fitting.
5% VAT relief – if the applicant is over the age of 60 but does not have a qualifying disability or chronic illness, a reduced rate of 5% VAT is applied instead. This is only applicable for stairlifts installed in a domestic setting and does not apply to commercial installations.

How Quickly Can A Stairlift Be Installed?
The average turnaround from initial enquiry to installation is anywhere from 2 weeks, up to 3 months for a custom ordered curved stairlift. However, we have some excellent stairlift providers that can install within 72 hours if an urgent fitting is required.
How much does a stairlift cost to run?
All stairlifts are designed to be power saving and run at a lost cost. It is calculated to be as little as 0.0024kWh or 24 Watts per hour. An average of 20p a day if it is in regular use, or less if it is not used frequently. How much energy the stairlift will use will depend on:
How often you use the stairlift daily
What type of stairlift you have (straight/curved as well as make/model)
What the cost of your energy is with your provider
How much weight can a stairlift hold?
Most stairlifts have a generic weight limit of 120kg/ 19 stone, but there are many models with a higher limit up to 159kg / 25 stone. If the customer requires a stairlift with a higher weight limit, there are some stairlift models on the market that cater for this called ‘heavy duty’.
If you think you may require a heavy duty stairlift please advise the weight limit required in the ‘additional notes’ section of our quotation form.
Which stairlift company is best?
Although there is no ‘best’ stairlift model there are several brands that we recommend highly based on the quality of the product, the competitive pricing, and the customer service. The brands we recommend highly are:
- Acorn Stairlifts
- Brooks Stairlifts
- Handicare Stairlifts
- Companion Stairlifts
- Age UK Stairlifts
- Stannah Stairlifts
We have a variety of installers that can provide a quote for all the above stairlifts, as well as other brands if you have a particular preference or requirement. Rest assured we will only ever request a quote from a reputable stairlift company. Most stairlift companies that we partner with can provide a lower price by up to 20% of the average retail price and can offer a price match guarantee if you find a cheaper deal with a different installer.
You can find more information on the above stairlifts on our stairlift information page.
Do Stairlifts Take Up A Lot Of Room?
For an average set of stairs, the stairlift will fit comfortably while also allowing enough room for non-stairlift users to access them. Modern stairlifts are manufactured with a wide variety of features to save on space such as arms and footrests that fold in, and seats that fold up, when the stairlift is not in use.
There are also particular models such as the Acorn 130 T700 that is a slimline stairlift, designed for particularly narrow stairs.
Does Stairlift Installation Cause Any Damage?
The stairlift rail will be bolted into the stairs when installed, to ensure it is secure and safe for the user. Eventually when you remove the stairlift there will be small holes in the carpet or wood which are small and usually unnoticeable, particularly on carpets as the carpet fibres will cover the holes when the pile comes back.
Surprisingly the stairlift is not attached to the wall at all, so there should be no damage to the wall. There are absolutely no structural changes to your home when installing a stairlift. The stairlift is adapted as necessary for your home. On some occasions the electrics may need to be altered and a fused spur fitted on the stairs or landing, but the installer will price this into your quotation if necessary.
How much does an outdoor stairlift cost?
The price is dependent on the number of steps needed. Most of our suppliers can only install a straight outdoor stairlift, so if you have steps that have a bend in them a stairlift may not be a suitable option. Prices are usually around the same price as an indoor straight stairlift, averaging at £2,845.
We have a select number of installers that can install an outdoor stairlift, as not all stairlifts are suitable to be open to the elements. We can provide quotations for Acorn and Companion stairlifts which are suitable for outdoor use. Get a quote within one hour by filling out our form.
Can you fit stairlifts to narrow staircases?
Yes, many models of stairlift are designed specifically with narrow staircases in mind. Straight stairlifts are almost always suitable for a narrow staircase requiring only a minimum staircase width of 710mm or 28”. Curved staircases require a slightly larger width of 760mm or 30” to be installed with most models.
If you are unsure, it is always best to have a survey after measuring to be confident a stairlift will fit before you make any decisions. All of our suppliers provide a free in-depth survey and quotation service.
Can you fit a perch seat stairlift?
Yes, some of our installers offer the perch seat as a great option for users who would struggle with a seated position. This type of seat is particularly useful for those with hip and knee issues that restrict their movement. The perch seat allows the user to be in a similar position to standing while using the stairlift, but with additional support and safety.
The perch seat has a shorter seat than usual and a retractable seatbelt. Perch seats are available with two of our trusted suppliers. If you would like more information about perch seats or to get a quote, contact us by calling or fill out a form here and we will get straight back to you.
How Much Are Stairlift Service Costs?
Generally servicing is inexpensive, but the pricing varies between installers. Most of our installation suppliers provide the first years’ service completely free of charge to ensure you are happy with the stairlift and the service provided before you commit to a maintenance package. Maintenance costs can start at £99 up to £400 depending on the frequency of the service and what is included. For example, a full service that includes the replacement of parts, labour and emergency break down call outs will be at the end figure.
It is recommended that you have an annual stairlift service to ensure the stairlift is running efficiently and safely. Servicing prevents parts degrading to a point of no return, keeping your stairlift running for up to 8 years longer than a non-serviced stairlift. If your stairlift develops a fault, you will likely have priority for repair if you have an existing servicing package with your installer. Additionally having a full service history is more appealing to buyers if you choose to sell your stairlift at a later date.
Do stairlifts come with a warranty?
All stairlifts come with a warranty so you can rest assured the stairlift is in good working condition. If the stairlift breaks down during this time or has a fault, the installer will replace any parts required or replace the stairlift in its entirety depending on the fault.
A 12-month warranty is the standard with all new stairlifts but can be shorter if you purchase a reconditioned stairlift. You can also purchase an extended warranty either at point of sale, or when your warranty is due to expire for extra peace of mind. Other options like servicing packages also are available, and may offer an extended warranty within the price.
Can a stairlift be fitted over two floors or more?
All stairlifts come with a warranty so you can rest assured the stairlift is in good working condition. If the stairlift breaks down during this time or has a fault, the installer will replace any parts required or replace the stairlift in its entirety depending on the fault.
A 12-month warranty is the standard with all new stairlifts but can be shorter if you purchase a reconditioned stairlift. You can also purchase an extended warranty either at point of sale, or when your warranty is due to expire for extra peace of mind. Other options like servicing packages also are available, and may offer an extended warranty within the price.
How To Remove A Stairlift?
When your stairlift is no longer required and you would like to remove it, or sell it, we recommend contacting We Buy Any Stairlift. They purchase and remove a wide variety of stairlifts so that they can be recycled.

Guide To Getting The Cheapest Quote For Stairlift Installation:
Most of our customers reach out to us because they are looking for the most affordable option to have a stairlift installed. We have created a helpful guide to help provide information on how you can get a stairlift at the lowest price, without compromising on quality.
Have A Survey
We find a lot of our customers want to request a price only, but do not want an installer in the home to assess the stairs. Although some installers will provide an average price for their product, many will not discuss a price at all until they assess your home. This isn’t a case of them quite literally wanting to get a foot through the door, but because it is hard for them to give a price until they know what product would be suitable.
In the survey they will assess not just the width and length of your stairs but the layout such as obstructions, any landings, or curves in the stairs, and if any alterations to the electrics would be required for installation. They will also assess the user by checking their capabilities/limitations, and their measurements (i.e seat to head measurement, floor to knee, back to knee and head to toe). Once the surveyor has a full idea of what you will require, they can give you an accurate stairlift quote.
The installers on our panel ALL conduct surveys and provide stairlift quotes free of charge, and there is no pressure or obligation to proceed to a sale.
Consider Reconditioned Stairlifts
It is worth speaking to your installer to see if they fit reconditioned stairlifts. If they do, you can ask for them to provide a reconditioned stairlift quote alongside a brand new stairlift quote so you can compare the price. Sometimes there isn’t much difference in the price and sometimes it can lower the price drastically.
There are pros and cons to having a reconditioned stairlift fitted instead of a new stairlift. For more information visit our reconditioned stairlift page for more info.
Check If You Qualify For Financial Assistance
Depending on your circumstances, you may be eligible for financial assistance. If you contact your local council, they can talk you through the assessments to check if you would be eligible for assistance purchasing your own stairlift. Or you can find out more information on our dedicated page Getting A Stairlift Fitted By The Council.
Get Quotes From Three Separate Installers
However, we do find that if you obtain more than 3 quotes it can get overwhelming, and you may start to get hassled by many installers all at once. Three really is the magic number! Afterall, if you are still unhappy with the initial 3 quotes provided, you can always reach out and get further quotes.
Consider Optional Extras Carefully
In addition to the basic product, many installers will offer optional extras and upgrades such as:
- Changes to the seat upholstery – this maybe a preferrable colour, style or fabric
- Upgrade to powered swivel – when you arrive at the top of the stairs you will need to swivel your chair towards the landing to ensure you can exit the stairlift safely. Standard manual swivel is provided which means you pull a lever situated at either side of the seat. Installers will offer the option to upgrade where the chair will automatically swivel for you when you arrive at the destination. This option is helpful for those who may struggle to operate a lever.
- Upgrade to powered footrest – similarly to the swivel upgrade, you can opt to have a automatically folding footrest so that it folds away when out of use. This is particularly helpful for those who struggle to bend down and do not want to keep the footrest folded down all the time.
- Additional servicing packages – some installers provide up to 3 years of servicing as standard with the stairlift and others do not include this. If servicing is not included, the installer may suggest a package which is at an additional cost. Servicing allows the stairlift to keep running smoothly for a longer period and means it will be checked periodically to ensure electrical and mechanical parts are operating as they should. The service engineer will replace or repair any components they seem worn or broken.
Although it can be tempting to add these optional extras, it will add more to your total price. We suggest considering the options carefully and only choose what you realistically need to keep the stairlift quote low.
